MOVING ON TO NEW SITE

Hey, Everyone.

I wanted to thank you all for always visiting, but as of right now, I've moved to a new home, my personal website and will be slowly shutting down here.

Hope you come find me at

Christine Steeves Speakman

If you check out the ChrisChat's One-Stop Blog, you'll find all the new entries plus the slow moving of past ones. Plus the categories at the side allow you to find the post you're most interested in...at least that's the plan :)

Again, thanks and hope to see you over there.

Reviewer: How you’re published…it matters

I have nothing against self-pubbed books. Let’s get that out of the way right now.

Why then does it matter how your book was published? Because some methods, publishers, have reputations. Some work harder on their final product. Some only offer what the author can pay…wants to pay.

Experience is a pain because we all run up against it even when we’re different than the ten or more who showed up before us.

Reviewers have limited time on their hands and, yes, if you did any cutting of corners just to get your book out, well, sorry, but we do consider our time invested in reading. Your choice in publishing isn’t an automatic decline. It goes hand in hand with all the other bits of your request…information, tone of email, etc.

The key though, the main reason on the “how” factor getting your review request declined…hiding it.

Never hold back information when sending in your request.

Never hide anything, reviewers will find what you don’t want us to know.

Reader: Your website

Remember when we all played with the same box of crayons? Red was red and lime-yellow was lime-yellow.

Now our computers have their own shades and they haven’t decided on what that shade should be.

The colour combination on your large monitor may look clear, but once shrunk to a small tablet or phone screen and you have splatter-wash.

The worse is reading words through a picture – yes, a personal problem on one of my sites. Given it’s way down the side menu, well, I’m waiting it out.

Or is the worse bouncing letters floating on the screen, to the point of lost readability?

Take the time to gather input from friends on what they see. How they like what they see. Look at your website on various screen sizes. And don’t forget to let your readers know the site is under construction…get their input.

Remember one pet peeve – too frequent a change can lose your viewers. We’re creatures of habit and when looking for info, we want it where it’s always been.

Editor: Pet Peeve – Style Manuals

There are more than just your favourite.

The others are not wrong because they disagree with yours.

Publishing houses have their own rules for a reason.

Language and grammar isn’t carved in stone…just go ask the comma rule changes; the s’s changes or was that s’?
